Thousands of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists are gathering at Suhrawardy Udyan today, Saturday, July 19, for a national rally. The event aims to press for a seven-point demand, including the creation of a level playing field for the upcoming national elections and the implementation of a Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system.
According to party sources, the program will commence at 10:00 AM with Quran recitation, followed by Hamd and Naat. The main proceedings are scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM.
Despite the official start time in the afternoon, activists and supporters began arriving at the rally venue in droves from early morning. Many activists also gathered at Suhrawardy Udyan last night, Friday.
Observations from Farmgate, Kawran Bazar, and Shahbag in the capital show workers and supporters walking in groups towards Suhrawardy Udyan. Some have cloths tied around their heads, while others carry party flags or the red and green flag of Bangladesh. Many are also wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the party's symbol, the "Dharipalla" (scales). Slogans can be heard intermittently.
Jamaat workers stated that they are attending the rally to advocate for the seven-point demand and to hear directives from the party's top leaders.
It has been reported that 10,000 buses have been rented for party workers and supporters to travel by road to the rally. These buses began arriving at designated locations from Friday night, with most attendees then walking to the assembly.
Additionally, 30 launches carrying workers have been crowding Sadarghat since morning, from where they are traveling to Suhrawardy Udyan by bus or on foot. Workers are also arriving by train, with Bangladesh Railway authorities allocating four pairs of trains to Jamaat-e-Islami for transporting activists to and from the grand rally.
To ensure a smooth rally, the party has deployed over six thousand volunteers. The police department has also taken special initiatives for traffic management in the capital.
