Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Wednesday said that their party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir did not give any interview to foreign media recently.
"A baseless report was published in the Kolkata-based Bengali daily 'Ei Somoy' that Mirza Fakhrul gave an interview with the newspaper," the BNP said in a statement, signed by BNP Assistant Office Secretary Advocate Taiful Islam Tipu.
"His interview headlined "Fakhrul wants Awami League and Jatiya Party in election" was published in the paper yesterday (Tuesday), which is blatantly false and fabricated," said the statement.
"This fabricated interview was published purposely to malign the image of the BNP and its secretary general," it added.
"The BNP Secretary General has not given any interviews to foreign media in recent times," it further said.
"The purpose of this fabricated report is to create doubts and suspicions in the minds of the people of Bangladesh. There is no reason for the people of the country and the party activists to be misled by the false statements published in that foreign Bengali media outlet," it further added.
Eralier, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has dismissed a report from the Kolkata-based news outlet Ei Samay as "fake news," claiming the interview was fabricated using artificial intelligence (AI).
The report had quoted him as saying that the Jamaat-e-Islami was pressuring the BNP for a share of power after failing to secure a promise of 30 parliamentary seats in the upcoming election.
From New York, where he is currently on a visit, Mirza Fakhrul stated, "That news is fake news. They (the newspaper) used artificial intelligence to generate this false, misleading report. Would any political leader make such absurd remarks? You tell me. It's a malicious act. I never said anything like that to Kolkata's Ei Samay."
