Ending a 17-year exile, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is making a historic return to Bangladeshi soil. He departed from London’s Heathrow Airport on a regular commercial flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, heading toward his homeland.
The flight departed Heathrow on Wednesday (December 24) at 6:15 PM local time (12:15 AM Thursday, Bangladesh time).
If everything proceeds according to schedule, Tarique Rahman is expected to land in Dhaka around 12:00 PM on Thursday (December 25). He is accompanied by his wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, and daughter, Zaima Rahman. Special security measures have been implemented for their arrival.
A "Royal" Homecoming
The BNP has completed massive preparations to accord its Acting Chairman the largest reception in recent memory. To mark the historic occasion, the party has organized a "royal reception" at the 300-feet area in Purbachal, where a colossal stage has been erected.
Upon landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Tarique Rahman is scheduled to travel directly to the Purbachal venue. Since Wednesday night, a massive wave of BNP leaders and activists from across the country has flooded the 300-feet highway to catch a glimpse of their leader. The stretch from Kuril to the main stage is currently packed to capacity.
The atmosphere on the ground is celebratory, with activists gathered in local clusters chanting slogans and joining processions. The air is filled with a singular chant: "The Leader is coming."
Extensive Preparations and Security
The entire area has transformed into a massive festival hub, decorated with slogans and placards. Street vendors have set up stalls to provide food and water to the gathering crowds, while trucks equipped with speakers play party anthems and patriotic songs at regular intervals.
Law enforcement agencies and police have placed the entire Purbachal area under a strict security blanket.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and Member Secretary of the Reception Committee, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, expressed optimism that the gathering could reach 5 million people.
"Tarique Rahman arrives on December 25. We are certain this area will turn into a massive sea of people and a grand reunion," Rizvi stated.
According to party sources, the mass reception at the Purbachal Highway Express area is expected to draw not only political activists but also members of the general public. Alongside law enforcement, party volunteers are working tirelessly to ensure the event remains disciplined and safe.
