PM to inaugurate Amar Ekushey book fair on Feb 1

The month-long "Amar Ekushey Grantha Mela 2024", the country's largest book fair, is going to begin on its traditional date of the first day of February this year.

"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to open the fair to be held under the auspices of Bangla Academy on its premises and Suhrawardy Udyan on February 1 at 3 pm," Member Secretary of the Amar Ekushey Book Fair Committee Dr KM Muzahidul Islam told BSS.

A total of 895 stalls have been allocated to 573 organizations. Among them 786 are general stalls while 109 stalls will be dedicated to little magazine chattar, said Muzahidul.

Moreover, a total of 37 pavilions have been allocated this year. Last year, a total of 901 stalls were allocated in favour of 601 organizations.

This year, the entire work of the fair is being done by Bangla Academy alone to avoid any criticism, said Muzahidul, adding, "In the previous years, some event management companies were involved in fair arrangements which faced some criticism last year".

The preparation for the fair started soon after the end of the last fair and committees have been formulated in three-phase - committee for preparation phase, committee for inaugural ceremony and separate committees for conducting the month-long fair.

Along with cultural programmes and month-long seminars, there will be arrangements for children and teenagers which include drawing, music and recitation competitions.

Stall allotment for old and newly enlisted publications was done through a digitalized lottery system on January 23, said the organizers.

Meanwhile, besides the enlisted 601 organizations, some 70 new publications have applied to get stall allocation responding to the notice. Among them, 23 new publications got selected.

Like previous years, the main stage of the fair will be on the Bangla Academy premises while book unwrapping and 'Lekhak Bolchi' stages will be set up on Suhrawardi Udyan premises, said Mujahidul. 'Shishu Chattar' has also been set up in Sadhu Shanga area beside the Ramna Kali Temple.

For notable contributions to various aspects of Bangla literature, this year, the Bangla Academy Literary Award-2023 will be given to 16 individuals in 11 categories- poetry, fiction, essay/research, translation, drama, children's literature category, Liberation War, Bangabandhu, environment/science field, biography and folklore.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hand over the awards at the inaugural ceremony of the Amar Ekushey Book Fair-2024 scheduled to begin on February 1, said the release.

The award recipients are: Shamim Azad (poetry), Novelists Nuruddin Jahangir and Salma Bani (jointly in fiction), Zulfikar Matin (essay/research), Saleha Chowdhury (translation), Playwrights Mrittika Chakma and Masud Pathik (jointly in drama), Tapankar Chakrabarty (children's literature), Afroza Parvin and Asaduzzaman Asad (research on the Liberation War), Saifullah Mahmud Dulal and Md Mojibur Rahman (research on Bangabandhu), ornithologist Inam Al Haque (environment/science field), Ishak Khan (biography) and Tapan Bagchi and Suman Kumar Das (jointly in folklore).

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police has taken all measures like the previous years to ensure foolproof security of the Fair considering current political situation and challenges caused from operation of the metro rail in the book
fair area.

Militancy, arson attacks and traffic management are among the main challenges centering the book fair, DMP said in a press release after a meeting with senior police officials.

DMP observed that Metrorail service has appeared as a new challenge as it was noticed that miscreants have been trying to carry out sabotages on the Metrorail.

However, DMP will deploy a sufficient number of police personnel in both uniform and plain cloth inside and outside the book fair ground while a watch tower and fire tender will be set up to monitor everything around the fair venue, he said.

Besides, the fairground and its surroundings will be monitored round the clock with CCTV cameras and drones, DMP commissioner said. Team of DMP will sweep the whole venue while social media will be monitored to thwart rumours.

EC Working Towards National Elections, Not Local Ones

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), A M M Nasir Uddin has stated that the Election Commission (EC) is working with a focus on national elections rather than local ones. Speaking to journalists on Tuesday (December 31) after a discussion meeting with election officials at the Cumilla Regional Election Office, the CEC shared this information. Nasir Uddin mentioned, "From the very beginning, major political parties have been demanding national parliamentary elections. They have not emphasized local government elections. Hence, we are preparing for the national parliamentary elections instead of local government ones. We hope to complete the voter list by March 2. After necessary updates and corrections, the finalized voter list will be published. We are committed to delivering a free and fair election to the nation." The CEC further stated that the election schedule has not yet been set by the commission. Preparations are being made following the Chief Adviser’s statement. However, it will become clearer when the elections will take place once the commission receives reports from various reform committees, including the Election Commission Reform Committee. The Chief Election Commissioner, A M M Nasir Uddin, attended a meeting regarding the voter list update and preparations for the 13th National Parliamentary Elections. This meeting involved the regional election officer at the Cumilla Regional Election Office, covering Cumilla, Noakhali, Chandpur, Lakshmipur, Feni, and Brahmanbaria districts. The discussions included preparations for updating the voter list and other related matters with senior district election officers, additional district election officers, and upazila election officers. The meeting was chaired by Cumilla Regional Election Officer Md. Dulal Talukder. CEC's personal secretary Md. Ashraful Alam; Deputy Project Director (Database) of the Election Commission Secretariat, Major Md. Mamunur Rashid; and other election officials working in the Cumilla region at both the district and upazila levels were also present at the meeting.

Attack on 'March for Unity' Convoy, Bagherhat Turns Into a Battlefield

Reports have emerged of an attack on the convoy of the anti-discrimination student movement's 'March for Unity' in Mollahat, Bagherhat. The incident occurred around 11:30 am on Tuesday (December 31) in Mollahat. It has been reported that 25 buses carrying students departed from Khulna Metropolitan City for Dhaka earlier in the morning. When the convoy reached the Madrasa Ghat area of Mollahat in Bagherhat, local assailants threw stones at the vehicles and stopped them, assaulting several people. As the students retaliated, the area quickly turned into a battlefield. The clash lasted for an hour, with reports of at least 20 people injured. Police and military forces are working to bring the situation under control. The students stated that the attackers, who were already prepared, launched the assault as the convoy passed through Mollahat around 11:30 am. They also alleged that local residents supported the attackers. Despite the incident taking place near the police station, the students claimed the police remained inactive. Regarding the incident, Jahurul Tanvir, coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Movement in Khulna, said, "Our convoy was peacefully heading to Dhaka from Khulna. Along the way, we were attacked, leaving many injured. This attack was orchestrated by collaborators of the fascist government." He further added, "The attack was premeditated. However, no obstacle can deter us from our goal. Our brothers have shed their blood. Justice must be served promptly, and those responsible must be brought to justice and given exemplary punishment. Otherwise, the students themselves will identify and take action against the perpetrators."

Gas Pipeline Explosion in Habiganj, 4 Killed, 2 injured

Four individuals, including an engineer, were killed in an explosion at the gas substation line of Akij Group in Bahubal, Habiganj. The explosion occurred on Tuesday (December 31) around 9:00 am. The incident was confirmed by Bahubal Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zahedul Islam. Among the deceased, the identities of two have been confirmed. Their names are Mizan Gazi and Mahfuz. It has been reported that both of them were workers at the factory. They were residents of Chandpur. Regarding the incident, OC Zahedul Islam said, "The explosion occurred around 9:00 am, claiming the lives of two people on the spot. Four others, who were seriously injured, were sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College. I have heard that two more succumbed to their injuries on the way to the hospital."

17 Forest Workers Abducted from Hill in Teknaf

A total of 17 forest workers have been abducted reportedly by miscreants from the hills in the Jadimura area of Teknaf, Cox's Bazar. The incident occurred on Monday morning (December 30) to the west of Teknaf's Jadimura area. The matter has been confirmed by Teknaf Upazila Executive Officer Sheikh Ehsan Uddin. The abducted individuals are: Ayub Khan (18), Ayub Ali (50), Ansar Ullah (18), Ayat Ullah (22), Shamchu (45), Islam (21), Shamchu (40), Ismail (35), Mohammad Hasim (40), Nur Mohammad (21), Syed Amin (30), Safi Ullah (30), Ayub (50), Mahata Amin (18), Saiful Islam (22), Syed (50), and Rafique (33). Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Teknaf Model Police Station, Gias Uddin, said, "Efforts are underway to rescue the abducted forest department workers. Police and other law enforcement agencies have reached the spot. We are actively addressing the matter." Teknaf Upazila Executive Officer Sheikh Ehsan Uddin added, “The forest department workers went to the hills in the morning for work under the department's supervision. During this time, we received news that some individuals had taken them away. Law enforcement agencies are working to rescue them.”

Trainee Doctors Block Shahbagh Intersection

Trainee doctors have occupied Shahbagh in Dhaka, demanding an increase in their monthly stipends. On Sunday (December 29), at around 11:30 am, postgraduate private trainee doctors blocked the Shahbagh intersection, demanding that their stipends be increased to 50,000 BDT. Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Monsur told the media that the trainee doctors came onto the road around 11:30 am. The blockade halted traffic movement, causing commuters to suffer. Earlier on December 21, the trainee doctors had set a deadline for increasing their monthly stipends. They warned that if their demands were not met, postgraduate private trainee doctors across the country would go on strike. In response, the government increased their stipend by 5,000 BDT (from 25,000 to 30,000 BDT). However, the trainee doctors rejected this decision and announced they would continue their movement.
