Battery-Powered Rickshaw Drivers Block Roads Again
Protesting the ban on battery-powered rickshaws, drivers in Dhaka have continued their road blockades for several days. Today, they blocked the roads in Agargaon, disrupting traffic in the area.
Since 10:30 AM on Tuesday (November 25), drivers have gathered on the streets, demanding the lifting of the ban.
Additional Deputy Police Commissioner (ADC) of Mirpur Traffic Division, Tania, said the blockade has significantly affected traffic flow. "We are diverting vehicles from Mirpur-10 to alternative routes to ease congestion. Efforts are underway to bring the situation under control," she added.
Meanwhile, the government has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court's Chamber Court on Monday, challenging the ban. Simultaneously, rickshaw drivers are meeting with Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali to discuss their demands.
Earlier, on November 19, the High Court bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Mahmudur Raji ordered a halt to battery-powered rickshaws in the Dhaka Metropolitan area within three days.
Following the High Court order, rickshaw drivers began protests in various parts of the capital.
The protesters have declared they do not accept the court’s directive and are demanding its withdrawal. They have vowed to continue their demonstrations until they are allowed to operate their rickshaws.
