A trawler carrying 39 passengers capsized in the Meghna River near Hatia in Noakhali on Saturday (May 31) afternoon, leaving 19 people missing.
The vessel was travelling from Bhasan Char to Noakhali when it sank around 3 pm, reportedly due to rough weather conditions.
According to sources, the trawler, operated by Jahangir Majhi, departed from Bhasan Char earlier in the day with 39 passengers on board. It was heading toward Karim Bazar Ghat in the Char Nandi Union of Hatia. Among the passengers were Rohingya refugees, members of the Ansar force, and police personnel.
Ashish Chandra Saha, officer-in-charge of the Nalchira River Police Outpost in Hatia, confirmed to RTV News that rescue operations are underway. Several individuals have been rescued, but the exact number of those still missing could not be confirmed at the time of reporting.
Saha added that the trawler capsized amid unfavourable weather conditions.
