The death toll from a violent collision between two passenger buses in the capital’s Nadda area has risen to four while at least 10 others remain injured, police confirmed on Wednesday.

The deceased have been identified as Laiju Begum (38), Kabir Jomaddar (47), Khushi Begum (35) and Md. Robiul (22).

According to eyewitnesses and law enforcement, the accident occurred early Wednesday morning when a Dhaka-Barishal route bus operated by 'Islam Paribahan' rammed into the rear of an 'Akash Paribahan' bus in the Nadda area under Bhatara Thana.

Following the high-speed impact, the Islam Paribahan bus lost control and overturned onto the road divider.

The rear section of the Akash Paribahan bus was severely mangled in the crash, resulting in one passenger dying on the spot.

Upon receiving information about the accident around 6:15 am, a rescue team from the Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the scene.

Working alongside local residents, rescuers extricated the trapped and injured passengers from the wreckage, transferring them immediately to Kurmitola General Hospital and Baridhara General Hospital.

Three of the critically injured victims later succumbed to their injuries while undergoing emergency treatment, bringing the total number of fatalities to four.

Bhatara Thana police stated that traffic movement on the busy road has returned to normal after wreckers successfully removed both damaged buses from the thoroughfare.
