A deadly gas leakage at a shipbreaking facility in Bhatiary under Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram resulted in the deaths of seven laborers, including two brothers, and left multiple others sickened on Friday morning.

The victims' names could not be immediately confirmed following the tragedy.

Confirming the location, Al Mamun, an official from the Fire Service and Civil Defence's Chattogram divisional office, stated that the disaster transpired at the Ferdous Steel Ship Recycling Industries plant, situated along the Bay of Bengal coastline to the west of Bhatiary Railway Station.

However, he was unable to offer additional specifics regarding the event at the time.

According to local residents, two workers succumbed immediately at the scene when toxic fumes escaped within the yard, while several colleagues became severely ill.

Emergency responders and locals rescued the affected individuals, initially transporting them to Bhatiary BSBA Hospital before transferring them to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where five more workers tragically passed away.

Authorities have yet to determine the precise trigger behind the gas leak.

The facility, operated by the Ziri Subedar Group, has a history of industrial accidents; on September 16 of last year, an explosion inside an oil tank at the same yard left eight workers with severe burn injuries.

Similarly, an earlier tragedy at Sitakunda's SN Corporation Shipbreaking Yard on September 7, 2024, left 12 workers injured, six of whom eventually perished after breathing in leaked noxious gases.
