Thunderbolt kills 9 in Sirajganj

A total of nine people, including five of a family, were killed and four others injured as lightning strikes hit them at Ullah Para upazila of the district today (Thursday).

The deceased were identified as Shah Alam ,40, son of Nurul Islam of Matikora village of the upazila, Abdul Quddus ,60, son of Bahadur of the same village, Mobakhor ,40, son of Imam Pramanik of Shippur village, Monaf ,18, son of Mokab of the same village, Shamser Ali ,60, son of Saber Ali, Afsar Hossain ,63, Shaheen,21, son of Shamser Ali, Ritu Khatun ,14 and Jannati Khatun, 14.

All of them were procuring plants of Aman paddy at Matikora Dakshinpara village of Ullapara upazila in the afternoon, said Panchakroshi Union Parishad Chairman Tauhidul Islam Firoz.

Once the rain started, they took shelter in a Shallow house near the field, he said, adding that subsequently, the thunderbolt fell on that house, leaving seven of them dead on the spot.

Other two persons succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospital, he added.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ujjal Hossain said that each victim family has been given financial assistance of Taka 25,000 from the disaster management fund.

Ullapara Model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazrul Islam said the bodies were handed over to their families.

Jatiya Party's Mostafa re-elected as Rangpur city mayor

Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa has been re-elected as the mayor of Rangpur City Corporation. He got a total of 1 lakh 46 thousand 798 votes. His nearest rival, the Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Amiruzzaman Piyal, got 49,892 votes. On the other hand, Awami League nominated candidate Lutfa Dalia got 22 thousand 306 votes, he is in the fourth place in the competition. On the other hand, Awami League's rebel candidate Latifur Rahman is in the third position with 33 thousand 833 votes.

Siful awarded as the Best Emerging Entrepreneur

Md. Siful Islam has been awarded as the Best Emerging Entrepreneur in the 'Freelancer Award 2022' arranged by the Freelancers Association of Bangladesh. Two killed in Lakshmipur road accident

In Ramgatti, Lakshmipur, two motorcyclists collided head-on. Two youths named Alauddin (25) and Ali Akbar (27) were killed. The accident took place at Hossain Market area of Charporagachha Union of the upazila at around 6 am on Tuesday (December 20). The deceased Alauddin is the son of Sahab Uddin of charporagacha village of charporagacha union and Akbar is the son of Nurul Islam of Char Algi village of Char Algi union. According to police and locals, two motorcycles belonging to Alauddin and Akbar collided at the spot. They were seriously injured. Later the locals rescued them and sent them to the Upazila Health Complex. They both died around 11 pm. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ramgati Police Station Alamgir Hossain said that both the injured in the motorcycle accident have died. Police have been dispatched to the scene. Further action will be taken after talking to the families of the victims.

Three-way collision in Rangpur, killed 5

5 people were killed in a three-way collision between Truck-Autorickshaw-Ambulance at Nengtichira area of Rangpur. In this accident, four people died on the spot and one person is undergoing treatment in the hospital. However, name and address were not initially known. The accident took place on Monday (December 19) around 7 pm near the Nengtichira bridge in Taraganj on the Rangpur-Dinajpur highway. Traffic on the road has been stopped due to this incident. Police are trying to normalize the situation.
