As International Women’s Day approaches and key global summits draw near, Sightsavers is emphasizing the urgent need to improve employment access for women—particularly those with disabilities, who face compounded challenges to achieving financial independence.
Barriers and the Call for Action
Amrita Rejina Rozario, Country Director of Sightsavers Bangladesh, highlighted the issue, stating:
"Lack of access to resources and workplace barriers continue to exclude millions of women—especially those with disabilities—from economic opportunities. The combined effects of gender discrimination and disability create multiple, overlapping barriers, often pushing women with disabilities into extreme poverty."
She urged global leaders attending CSW69 and GDS to commit to disability-inclusive employment strategies, which could drive both economic growth and gender equality.
Transforming Lives Through Inclusion
Sightsavers is actively working to ensure women—particularly those with disabilities—can access healthcare, gain new skills, and build confidence to secure jobs or start businesses.
One such success story is Promila Biswash, a tailor for over two decades, who struggled with her vision until receiving support from Sightsavers' inclusive eye care program.
"A year or two ago, I started having trouble with my eyes and couldn’t thread the needle on my machine," Promila recalled. After undergoing an eye test in July, she was prescribed glasses. "Now I can see clearly and work with ease."
Sightsavers' efforts demonstrate that empowering women—especially those facing additional challenges—can transform lives while contributing significantly to national economic growth.
