After being shut down for a prolonged period due to a gas crisis, Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL) is fully prepared to resume production following the restoration of a stable gas supply.
The ammonia plant at the fertilizer factory located in Anwara, Chittagong, has already been activated, and it will return to full urea production shortly after completing technical testing.
According to factory sources, the production of ammonia—a primary raw material for urea—began on September 9 once the gas supply was re-secured.
However, due to the prolonged shutdown, routine maintenance and safety checks are being conducted on certain pipelines and components of the urea unit. Once these mechanical preparations are complete, full-scale urea production will commence.
SM Abdullah Al Mamun, General Manager (Commercial) of CUFL, stated that the factory has been receiving adequate gas according to its demand for over a week.
He noted that ammonia production was made possible immediately upon receiving gas, and overall production activities will start soon following the temporary mechanical preparation of the urea plant.
An official from Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited (KGDCL) stated that, in line with national directives, gas is being prioritized for the fertilizer and power sectors to keep agricultural industrial production operational.
Currently, over 40 million cubic feet of gas is being supplied daily to CUFL, with the potential to increase the supply further as the plant continues operation.
Operated by the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) under the Ministry of Industries, the factory produces an average of about 1,000 tons of urea fertilizer daily.
The plant's return to full production will help ensure fertilizer supplies for the domestic agricultural sector while contributing to foreign exchange savings.
