
A combined student alliance candidate, Abu Sadik Kayem, supported by Islami Chhatra Shibir, has won the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) Vice President (VP) position by a large margin, although he has not yet been formally declared the winner.
The final results from all polling centers on Wednesday (September 10) show that Sadik Kayem secured 14,042 votes. His closest rival, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal candidate Abidul Islam Khan, received 5,658 votes.
The independent alliance candidate, Umama Fatima, came in third with 2,549 votes. Independent candidate Shamim Hossain received 2,385 votes. Abdul Kader, the candidate from the Anti-Discrimination Student Parliament panel, received 668 votes, and Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Imi of the Protirodh Parishad received 11 votes.
Abidul Islam Khan and Umama Fatima have both rejected the election results. Abdul Kader has also strongly criticized the election, alleging vote rigging.
The winning candidate, Sadik Kayem, is a former president of the Dhaka University Islami Chhatra Shibir and the current publicity and publications secretary of its central committee. During the voting, he had also accused Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal of irregularities and the administration of showing bias.
The announcement of results began around 2 a.m. on Tuesday (September 9). While Sadik Kayem won by a large margin in all halls, Jagannath Hall was the exception. He received only 10 votes there, while Abidul Islam Khan secured 1,276 votes.
Voting took place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at eight centers on the university campus, with 810 booths for DUCSU and hall union elections. This year, the total number of voters was 39,874—18,959 in five female halls and 20,915 in 13 male halls.
A total of 471 candidates competed for 28 DUCSU posts. For the hall unions, 1,035 candidates ran for a total of 234 posts (13 posts in each of the 18 halls). In total, each voter cast 41 ballots.
The voting for the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) and hall union elections began at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, September 9, and continued without interruption until 4 p.m. Students voted for 28 posts in the central union and 13 posts in each hall union.
Vote turnout was as follows: Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah Hall 80.24%, Amar Ekushey Hall 83.30%, Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall 81.43%, Jagannath Hall 82.44%, Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall 84.56%, Salimullah Muslim Hall 83%, Ruqayyah Hall 65.50%, Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall 68.39%, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall 67.08%, Sir A.F. Rahman Hall 82.50%, Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall 83.37%, Bijoy Ekattor Hall 85.02%, Surya Sen Hall 88%, Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall 75%, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall 87%, Kobi Jasimuddin Hall 86%, Kobi Sufia Kamal Hall 64%, and Shamsun Nahar Hall 63.67%.
