The Jagannath University (JnU) administration announced two days of mourning for Md Jobayed Hossain, a postgraduate student of the Statistics Department (2019–20 session), who was stabbed to death on the staircase of a house in Old Dhaka’s Armanitola area, where he had gone to give tuition on Sunday afternoon.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Rezaul Karim made the announcement on Monday during a virtual meeting attended by university officials, teachers, student leaders and journalists. JnU also suspended all its activities for the 20th founding anniversary of the University, scheduled to be observed on Tuesday.
“Jobayed’s death has deeply saddened us. We will not stop until the murder is properly investigated,” said JnU VC.
He added, "All exams will be suspended on October 21 and 22 to observe the mourning days, where the first day will feature mourning sessions and the second day will include a university-wide mourning rally. All University Day events and ceremonies are also postponed."
Jobayed was also a member of the convening committee of the JnU unit of Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chatradal and president of the Comilla District Students' Welfare Association.
According to police, the jealousy may have driven a college student to kill Jobayed. The suspect Mahir Rahman, a student of Shaikh Burhanuddin Post Graduate College, killed Jobayed after his girlfriend said that she liked Jobayed who was her private tutor.
Jobayed had been tutoring the girl in physics, chemistry and biology at her family's residence on Nurbox Lane in Armanitola. According to the police, there was no romantic involvement between Jobayed and the girl. Police are continuing the investigation.
Jobayed's body was found on the third floor of the building around 4:45pm yesterday. Police later found traces of blood from the staircase to the floor where his body was discovered lying face down.
Jagannath University students blocked the Tatibazar intersection and set fire in front of Bangshal Police Station, later yesterday evening demanding the arrest of those involved.
Police detained the girl from her residence at around 11:00 pm and recorded her statement after a long interrogation. Jobayed's body was sent to Mitford Hospital for autopsy around 10:50 pm.
