American pop superstar Taylor Swift made history at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on Sunday, September 27, capturing the coveted "Video of the Year" award to become the most-awarded artist in VMA history.

Heading into Sunday's ceremony in Los Angeles, the 36-year-old singer was tied with Beyoncé at 30 wins.

Swift secured her 31st VMA trophy for the music video of "The Fate of Ophelia," a track from her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl.

In addition to setting the all-time record, Swift received the inaugural "Artist Director" honor. She wrote and directed the music video for her song "Opalite," which featured a satirical pastiche of 1990s commercials.

A Dazzling Fashion Statement
Beyond her historic milestones, Swift’s red-carpet and stage attire drew significant attention. She wore a stunning deep blue ensemble featuring a velvet sleeveless bodice with a sheer, net-like collar detail.

The lower half of her outfit consisted of a long, shimmering silver-embellished skirt with a bold thigh-high slit, adding a striking contrast to her look.

She completed the outfit with dangling diamond earrings and sparkling high heels, blending dark blue and silver tones for a glamorous aesthetic.

During her acceptance speech, Swift dedicated her award to the late music legend Dolly Parton, stating that everyone was fortunate to have lived in the same world as her.

The ceremony also marked the debut of her new music video for "Patient Zero," starring Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson.

This is Swift's first music video release following her marriage to Travis Kelce. The song is one of four new tracks featured on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore.

Female Artists Dominate the Night
The 2025 VMAs were notably marked by the dominance of female artists. Sixty-eight-year-old pop icon Madonna led the evening with 13 nominations, ultimately taking home three awards: "Artist of the Year," "Best Dance," and "Best Collaboration."

Madonna won the "Best Collaboration" award alongside Sabrina Carpenter for the track "Bring Your Love," the lead single from Madonna's 2026 album Confessions Two.

A cinematic adaptation stemming from Madonna's album also picked up two awards for "Best Cinematography" and "Best Choreography."

Madonna’s appearance included her first VMA performance since 2003—where she famously kissed Britney Spears—this time sharing the stage with Sabrina Carpenter. British singer Charli XCX was also in attendance.

Historic Wins for Lisa, BTS, and Other Highlights

• BLACKPINK’s Lisa made history by winning "Best Pop" for her song "Dream," which features Japanese actor Kentaro Sakaguchi. The victory makes the 29-year-old the first Asian solo artist to win in the Best Pop category. Visibly emotional upon accepting the award, she thanked her fans for their unwavering support.
• Siena Spiro took home the award for "Best New Artist."
• BTS won "Best Group" and "Song of the Year" for their track "Swim."
• PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson won "Best Art Direction" for their collaborative track "Stateside."
• Olivia Rodrigo won "Best Alternative" for "The Cure."
• Nirvana was honored with the prestigious "Video Vanguard" award.

The ceremony also featured standout performances by British singer Raye, alongside emotional tribute performances honoring the late Dolly Parton and George Michael.
