Dr. Zubaida Rahman, Vice President of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation, has stated that thalassemia can be controlled if everyone works together to build a humane social system.
She made these remarks on Friday afternoon (July 31) while speaking at the "Blood Donor Honors-2026" event organized by the Bangladesh Thalassemia Association (BTA) in observance of World Blood Donor Day at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) auditorium in Ramna.
Dr. Zubaida Rahman emphasized that it is vital to stand beside families affected by thalassemia, offering them support and necessary reassurance.

"Many people do not know that this is a preventable disorder," she said. "With proper and timely treatment, even severely affected individuals can lead healthy lives."
Proposing the creation of an accurate nationwide database (registry) for individuals suffering from thalassemia and other congenital rare diseases, she noted the necessity of establishing a central roster of patients across the country.
Although it is not always possible to cure thalassemia warriors completely, she stressed that society must extend sincere empathy and a helping hand to them and their families.
Highlighting the importance of raising awareness, she noted that the condition can be diagnosed through prenatal screening or screening tests at any age.
She urged the expansion of thalassemia detection and awareness activities down to district hospitals, upazila health complexes, union levels, and rural communities.
Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of providing special training on the symptoms and treatment of the disease to newly recruited health workers.
Expressing gratitude to voluntary blood donors, Dr. Zubaida Rahman shared that her daughter, Zaima Rahman, is a regular voluntary blood donor who has donated blood seven times so far.
Chaired by Bangladesh Thalassemia Association President Engineer M.A. Matin, the event was attended by Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator and Freedom Fighter Md. Abdus Salam, and Ziaur Rahman Foundation Executive Director Prof. Dr. Farhad Halim Donar as special guests. Additionally, Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) President Prof. Dr. Harun Al Rashid and RAJUK Chairman Engineer Md. Riajul Islam attended as special invitees.
