This devastating incident occurred amidst a declared humanitarian ceasefire following a severe earthquake in the country. News outlet TRT Global reported this information on Monday night (May 12th) in a report.

Local sources indicated that the attack took place around 10:00 AM local time on Monday in Wet Htein Kwin village, located in the Sagaing region. The village is situated approximately 100 kilometers northwest of the epicenter of the March 28th earthquake.

A 34-year-old teacher from the school stated, "So far, 22 people have died—20 of them are children and two are teachers."

He further added, "We tried to scatter the children, but the fighter jet was very fast and dropped bombs quickly."

An official from the local education department also confirmed the same number of fatalities. However, no comment has been received from a junta spokesperson regarding the incident.

It is noteworthy that the Myanmar military had announced a ceasefire for the entire month of May, with the aim of continuing reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts following the powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake on March 28th, which claimed the lives of at least 3,800 people.

Despite this ceasefire announcement, fighting has continued in various regions of the country, particularly in Sagaing, Karen, and Chin states.

Civil war has been ongoing in Myanmar since the military ousted the elected civilian government in 2021. The junta forces have been using violence to suppress nationwide protests, while numerous ethnic armed groups and democratic forces have jointly formed a resistance.

In recent months, these resistance fighters have inflicted significant losses on the junta.
