Israel has claimed responsibility for killing senior Hezbollah leader Hashem Safieddine, who was believed to be a potential successor to the group’s chief, Hasan Nasrallah.

Indian news outlet NDTV reported the development on Wednesday (October 23).

In a statement on Tuesday (October 22), the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said, "It can now be confirmed that approximately three weeks ago, an attack killed Hashem Safieddine, head of Hezbollah's Executive Council, along with Ali Hussein Hajima, the head of Hezbollah’s Intelligence Directorate, and other commanders."

The statement added that the Israeli Air Force had conducted a precise intelligence-based strike on Hezbollah’s main intelligence headquarters in Dahieh, a stronghold in southern Beirut, three weeks ago. More than 25 Hezbollah members were reportedly present at the headquarters during the strike.

Hezbollah has not yet responded to Israel’s claim.

Earlier, on October 4, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, "The military has eliminated Hashem Safieddine."

In a speech addressing the people of Lebanon, Netanyahu stated that Israeli forces had killed thousands of "terrorists," including Hasan Nasrallah and several of his potential successors.

A relative of Nasrallah, also a Hezbollah member, said Hashem Safieddine had been unreachable since the Israeli attack in Beirut weeks earlier.

In early October, a source close to Hezbollah told AFP that Hashem Safieddine had strong ties with Iran and was considered a "potential" candidate for Hezbollah’s top leadership.
