Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to 14 years in prison in a high-profile corruption case, marking the longest prison term he has received amid a series of legal battles. Khan, who has been in custody since August 2023, faces more than 100 charges, including accusations of leaking state secrets and profiting from state gifts—allegations he insists are politically motivated.

This latest case, labelled by authorities as Pakistan's largest corruption scandal, involves Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, allegedly accepting land as a bribe from a real estate tycoon through the Al-Qadir Trust, which they established during Khan's tenure. Investigators claim Khan misused £190 million ($232 million) repatriated by the UK's National Crime Agency to cover the tycoon's legal penalties. However, Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party maintains the land was donated for a spiritual education centre and not for personal gain.

PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan condemned the trial as politically driven, asserting that Khan "has done no wrong" and will remain resilient. In the courtroom, Khan vowed not to pursue any deals or seek leniency following the verdict.

The court imposed the maximum sentence of 14 years on Khan, along with a fine exceeding £4,000. His wife, Bushra Bibi, received a seven-year prison term and a fine of more than £2,000. Bibi, who has been out on bail since last October, was taken into custody in court after her sentence was announced.

In 2023, Khan was sentenced to three years in prison for not declaring money earned from selling gifts he had received while in office.

Last year, Khan received a 14-year jail sentence over the selling of state gifts, and another 10 years for leaking state secrets. Both those sentences were suspended months later.

Despite being in jail and barred from holding public office, Khan still looms large over Pakistan's political scene. Last year's election saw candidates backed by Imran Khan winning the most number of seats out of all the parties.

His convictions have sparked widespread protests, with thousands of supporters clashing with police and facing mass arrests amid a government crackdown.
