Israel's cabinet has approved a ceasefire agreement in the blockaded Gaza Strip, which will take effect on January 19.

According to Al Jazeera, the agreement was approved following a vote in a meeting led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday afternoon (January 17).

A statement from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office said that after reviewing all political, security, and humanitarian aspects, and understanding that the proposed agreement supports the achievement of war objectives, the security cabinet accepted the agreement.

The statement also mentioned that the cabinet has recommended the government approve the proposed framework. The agreement will now proceed to the full cabinet for discussion and formal announcement. Reports indicate that the cabinet meeting began after the security cabinet meeting concluded.

After 15 months of continuous conflict, Israel and the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas agreed on a second ceasefire agreement in Gaza on Wednesday (January 15), mediated by the United States and Qatar. Qatari and American officials confirmed that the ceasefire will take effect from Sunday (January 19).

Meanwhile, despite the ceasefire agreement, the death toll from Israeli attacks in Gaza has risen to 101. Among the deceased are 31 women and 27 children.
