Israel-Hamas Ceasefire in Gaza Takes Effect
A ceasefire has finally begun in the besieged Gaza Strip. Israel delayed the implementation of the ceasefire due to Hamas not providing the names of three hostages to be released, as per the terms. Additionally, Israeli forces launched attacks in Gaza, killing 10 Palestinians.
According to BBC, the ceasefire was expected to begin at 12:30 pm Bangladesh time on Sunday, January 19.
Hamas-controlled Gaza Civil Defense reported that 10 people were killed in airstrikes starting from the expected ceasefire time. Among the victims, six were from Gaza City, three from the northern region, and one from Rafah. Additionally, 25 others were injured.
According to the BBC report, the Palestinian militant group Hamas released the names of three female hostages on the messaging app Telegram. They are Romi Gonen, Emily Damani, and Doron Stenbrencher. Hamas confirmed that these three women would be the first to be released as part of the ceasefire.
The countries mediating the ceasefire also announced that Hamas had handed over the names of the three hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office has also declared the ceasefire's implementation.
Earlier, Israel's Prime Minister had stated that the ceasefire would not take effect until Hamas provided the names of the hostages. Following this, despite the ceasefire being scheduled to begin in the morning, Netanyahu refrained from giving orders to halt Israeli military operations. Consequently, Israeli forces continued their attacks on Gaza, resulting in the deaths of 10 Palestinians on the first day of the ceasefire.
