Shortly after being sworn in as President of the United States, Donald Trump signed an executive order revoking the right to birthright citizenship. He acknowledged that the order is likely to face legal challenges.

According to the Washington Post, just hours after taking the oath as the 47th President of the United States on Monday (January 20), Trump signed this executive order.

The Washington Post reported that children born in the U.S. to parents who are in the country illegally or on temporary visas, such as for education or tourism, will no longer automatically receive U.S. citizenship. However, if at least one parent is an American citizen, the child will be recognized as a U.S. citizen at birth.

While signing the order, Trump admitted that since the right to birthright citizenship is enshrined in the Constitution, this order could face significant legal challenges.

For nearly 150 years, children born on U.S. soil have been granted birthright citizenship. Trump referred to this constitutional right as "ridiculous."

The new President expressed his belief that birthright citizenship is absurd and stated that there are strong legal arguments for changing this provision.

Earlier, Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States by Chief Justice John Roberts of the Supreme Court. This marks his second term as President after a brief hiatus.

Following his oath, Trump annulled 78 executive orders from the Biden era. He also announced several significant actions, including withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement, declaring an emergency at the Mexican border, reclaiming the Panama Canal, and increasing tariffs on foreign goods.

In addition, Trump granted pardons to nearly 1,500 people detained in connection with the Capitol Hill riot in 2021.
