US President Donald Trump has issued a severe ultimatum to Canada, threatening a 100% tariff on all Canadian imports if Ottawa finalizes a new trade agreement with China.

The threat marks a significant escalation in the already strained relations between the two neighbors since Trump’s return to the White House.

In a fiery post on Truth Social on Saturday, Trump warned Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney against allowing Canada to become a "Drop Off Port" for Chinese goods destined for the United States.

"China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life," Trump wrote.

He vowed that any finalized deal would trigger immediate and total tariffs on Canadian products entering the US.

The President also renewed his provocation regarding Canadian sovereignty by referring to Carney as "Governor," a pointed reference to Trump’s previous suggestions that Canada should be absorbed as the 51st US state.

This follows a controversial social media post earlier this week where Trump shared a map showing Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela covered by the American flag.

The war of words has intensified following the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Prime Minister Carney spoke of a "rupture" in the US-led global order—a comment widely interpreted as a critique of Trump’s protectionist policies.

Carney’s recent landmark visit to Beijing to secure a "strategic partnership" further angered Washington.

While Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc clarified that the agreement was not a full "free trade deal" but a resolution of specific tariff issues, Trump dismissed the distinction.

In a recent exchange, Trump claimed, "Canada lives because of the United States," to which Carney sharply responded, "Canada doesn't live because of the United States.

Canada thrives because we are Canadian." The escalating tension comes at a critical time, as the two nations prepare for CUSMA negotiations later this year and are set to co-host the FIFA World Cup 2026.
