Thousands of young people took to the streets to demand the restoration of democracy; for many, that journey ended in prison, where at least 273 detainees have died in custody.
The report, compiled using data from the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) and the Political Prisoners Network of Myanmar (PPNM), highlights a "lost generation" of students and activists.

The report brings to light specific stories that underscore the human cost of the crackdown:
Wutt Yee Aung (25): A zoology student at Dagon University. Arrested in September 2021 and sentenced to seven years, she died in the notorious Insein Prison on July 19 last year. While authorities claimed heart failure, her family and student unions insist she died due to severe head injuries sustained during interrogation and a lack of medical care.
Khant Linn Naing (19): A student sentenced to 15 years. In July 2023, his family received a letter stating he was shot while trying to escape during a prison transfer. Human rights activists dismiss this claim as implausible, given that prisoners are typically handcuffed and heavily guarded. His body was never returned to his family.

Despite losing significant territory in border regions to ethnic armed groups, the military junta continues its domestic crackdown.
