A devastating Russian drone strike targeted a bus carrying coal miners in Ukraine’s southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region on Sunday (February 1), killing at least 12 people. The attack comes at a critical moment as diplomatic efforts to halt the conflict are underway in the Middle East.

The victims were employees of DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy provider. According to Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal, the workers were returning from their shift at a mine near the town of Ternivka when the drone struck their vehicle.

"The enemy carried out a cruel and targeted attack on energy sector workers," Shmyhal stated on Telegram. "Twelve miners lost their lives, and several others were injured."

Emergency services released footage showing the charred remains of the bus, which had veered off the road following the explosion. DTEK described the incident as one of the deadliest single attacks on its workforce since the full-scale invasion began.

Attacks on Medical and Residential Sites
In a separate incident on the same day, Russian drones struck a maternity hospital and a residential building in the city of Zaporizhzhia. Regional officials reported that at least nine people were injured in these strikes, including women in the hospital’s gynecological department.

Fragile Truce and Peace Talks
These escalations occurred despite recent claims by US President Donald Trump that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to a temporary pause in strikes on Kyiv and other major cities due to extreme winter conditions. The Kremlin later clarified that this "humanitarian pause" was primarily focused on Kyiv and was slated to expire on Sunday.

The violence cast a shadow over the upcoming trilateral peace talks brokered by the United States. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that a second round of negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. is scheduled to take place this Wednesday and Thursday (February 4–5) in Abu Dhabi.

While both sides have expressed a willingness to find a compromise, significant hurdles remain, particularly regarding the status of occupied territories in the Donbas region and the withdrawal of Russian forces.
