At least 21 people have been killed and 61 others injured following a massive explosion at a fireworks factory in central China, state media reported on Tuesday.

The blast occurred at approximately 4:40 PM local time on Monday at the Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province. The region is widely recognized as a major hub for fireworks production.

Scene of Devastation
Footage circulating on social media shows thick plumes of smoke rising over a vast area, with several buildings reduced to rubble.

While news agencies like Reuters have not yet independently verified the footage, reports from the South China Morning Post indicate that nearly 500 firefighters, rescue workers, and medical personnel were deployed to the site.

Presidential Response
President Xi Jinping has ordered an immediate and thorough investigation to determine the cause of the disaster and ensure "strict accountability." He also directed local officials to strengthen risk and hazard control measures across major industries to protect public life and property.

It is common for the Chinese leadership to issue "important instructions" following major industrial accidents. Just last week, President Xi called for an upgrade to the nation’s disaster response capabilities.

Global Impact
China remains the world's dominant force in the pyrotechnics industry. According to the Observatory of Economic Complexity, China exported $1.14 billion worth of fireworks last year, accounting for more than two-thirds of the global market.

This tragedy follows a series of high-profile safety incidents in the region, including a devastating fire at the Wang Fuk Court complex in Hong Kong last November, which claimed 168 lives.
