A suspected case of Hantavirus has been placed under observation in Canada, marking the country's first potential case associated with the ongoing outbreak. The individual was a passenger on the cruise ship MV Hondius.

Dr. Bonnie Henry, the Provincial Health Officer for British Columbia, reported that the patient was admitted to the hospital presenting with mild symptoms, including fever and headache.

While preliminary tests suggest the presence of Hantavirus, samples have been sent to the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg for definitive confirmation.

Health authorities confirmed that the individual did not come into contact with the general public, having been placed directly under a monitoring system upon arrival at Victoria International Airport.

Globally, 11 people aboard the MV Hondius have contracted Hantavirus so far, resulting in three fatalities.

According to health officials, Hantavirus is typically transmitted through contact with rodent excreta or waste and does not easily spread from person to person.

However, experts express concern that the specific Andes strain linked to this outbreak can, in very rare cases, be transmitted through human-to-human contact.
