A drone attack has struck the Khor Mor gas field, the largest in Iraqi Kurdistan.

According to Iranian state media IRIB, the strategic gas facility located in the Sulaymaniyah province was targeted late Monday night (July 27).

The Khor Mor gas field supplies natural gas to the majority of power plants in the Kurdish region.

Around the same time, multiple explosions were reported in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdish autonomous region, located approximately 200 kilometers from the attack site.

Several videos capturing the moments of the explosions have circulated on social media.

Iraqi media and the Iranian news agency Fars reported that at least seven explosions occurred in Erbil, including in areas near the U.S. Consulate.

Meanwhile, police sources told Al Jazeera that at least four suspected Iranian drones targeted various infrastructure sites in the Khalifan and Soran areas, northeast of Erbil.

According to police claims, more than 10 U.S. fighter jets and drones were seen patrolling the skies over Erbil immediately following the attacks.

Additionally, massive fires broke out in and around the targeted areas, and it was reported that two drones crashed close to their targets.

Notably, the U.S. had suspended its military operations against Iran starting last Friday, following 13 consecutive nights of strikes in a new wave of attacks.

After the U.S. halted its strikes, Iran also refrained from retaliatory attacks. Amid this backdrop, the fresh drone attack in northern Iraq has sparked renewed concerns over the regional security situation.

Meanwhile, various U.S. media outlets claimed that the strikes were temporarily suspended due to a shortage of weapons and military equipment.

However, President Donald Trump rejected these claims, stating that the strikes were paused at the request of mediating countries.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Michigan on Monday, Trump said that good discussions are underway between the United States and Iran, and that there is a possibility of a positive outcome.
