Chinese officials sanctioned 10 persons charged with disseminating digital falsehoods concerning a lethal mudslide near the Nepal frontier, law enforcement stated on Monday, while search teams comb through the area for hundreds unaccounted for at a border checkpoint located on the Tibetan sector.
The disciplinary measures, which span from monetary penalties up to 10 days of custody, arrive as rescue personnel across both sides of the boundary continued search efforts following a catastrophic torrent that battered portions of Nepal and China's Tibet during the preceding week, washing away entire settlements.
Falsehoods propagated by the 10 citizens alleged that the count of missing or deceased individuals vastly exceeded officially disclosed statistics, per a bulletin released by the cybersecurity directorate under China's Ministry of Public Security.
One citizen, identified by the surname Qiu, posted online that "the news reports 1,400 fatalities, but in reality 3,000 people had previously been reported missing", whilst another bearing the surname Liu asserted that upwards of 3,000 persons perished within China as a consequence of the mudslide, the announcement further noted.
Officials refrained from detailing the specific penalty administered to each person.
The inundations have claimed a minimum of 903 lives in Nepal, where 4,247 individuals remain missing, according to the nation's disaster management agency.
An additional 16 have died alongside 546 individuals unaccounted for within Chinese-administered Tibet, where the mudflow leveled a tract measuring "about 0.7 square kilometres"—equivalent to 98 football fields, as documented by Chinese state media.
