Russia launched a drone strike on a railway in western Ukraine near the Polish border, moments after several top European security officials, including former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, used the same railway to travel toward Poland. No casualties were reported in the incident.
Ukrainian authorities stated that the Russian drone struck a passenger train in the Yahodyn area, located just two kilometers from the Polish border.
A major disaster was averted because all passengers were safely evacuated prior to the strike due to timely intervention, though the train's engine suffered extensive damage.
Security sources revealed that several Western officials, including Boris Johnson and UK National Security Advisor Jonathan Powell, used the route while returning from an international conference in Kiev.
Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine's state railway company, claimed that this diplomatic train was likely the primary target of the Russian drone.
Railway authorities further noted that based on intelligence regarding a potential attack, the schedule for the special diplomatic train had been moved up, allowing it to depart the station ahead of schedule.
Additionally, former CIA Director David Petraeus was present on another train at the scene during the attack.
Moscow claimed responsibility for the incident, stating that the strike targeted military and critical "rail infrastructure" in western Ukraine.
However, the attack, occurring in close proximity to NATO member Poland, has sparked renewed cross-border tensions.
