Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, along with his sister Priyanka Gandhi and top leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc, were detained by Delhi Police on Wednesday while participating in a protest march for the second consecutive day, demanding a revision of voter rolls and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, according to NDTV.
Other demonstrators present at the scene were also targeted by police, who were seen dragging protesters and forcing them into waiting police buses.
Congress claimed that party workers and supporters punctured the tire of a police bus to evade police obstruction.
The Gandhi siblings were previously taken into police custody on Tuesday (October 6) after staging a sit-in protest over the same issue.
On Wednesday (7 October), police intercepted them again when they attempted to demonstrate at Jantar Mantar, blocking them under the pretext of lacking prior permission.
After finishing a strategy lunch at a Delhi restaurant, the members of parliament headed toward Jantar Mantar, where police blocked the road.
Initially, top leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, were seated inside a bus. However, when police began detaining other protesters, INDIA bloc leaders stepped out of the bus and sat directly on the street.
Despite repeated police requests to clear the area, Rahul and Priyanka continued their sit-in protest on the road.
At one point, Priyanka Gandhi lay down on the street and challenged the police, stating, "Is this how members of parliament are treated? This is unprecedented. We will not budge an inch from here."
Subsequently, police dragged the two siblings and forcibly took them away in a bus.
