US President Donald Trump has dismissed White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia, several presidential advisors confirmed to CNN.
The move brings an end to Zacharia’s controversial, week-long tenure as the administration’s chief spokesperson.
The news follows comments made earlier by Trump to reporters, in which he suggested Zacharia reconsider remaining in the post—signaling the imminent conclusion of her brief term.
"Frankly, if I were you, I would reconsider," Trump said addressing Zacharia directly on Friday morning (October 16) local time.
The U.S. President stated that he would speak with Zacharia upon returning to the White House following his trip to Georgia, leaving the final decision up to her.
Ultimately, however, Trump made the decision to fire her himself.
Trump added that he asked Zacharia, "Katie, do you really need this position? I don't think you need it."
The public expression of distrust toward Zacharia—who assumed the role just about a week ago—marks an unprecedented moment for the presidency.
The Trump administration had come under growing pressure following her shaky debut in the press briefing room on Tuesday (October 13) and persistent questions surrounding her legal background.
