Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, a former mayor of Atlanta, on Tuesday was elected governor of the state of Georgia, becoming the first Black woman elected to that office in the United States, media projections showed.
In the election on Tuesday (November 3), Keisha Lance Bottoms received 1,951,283 votes, accounting for 54.48 percent of the total vote.
Meanwhile, Jackson received 1,630,052 votes, or 45.52 percent.
CNN and NBC News called the race in her favor.
Bottoms defeated billionaire health care executive Rick Jackson, who ran as a Republican. Current Governor Brian Kemp is term-limited and could not run again.
