A devastating landslide struck a passenger bus in India’s Himachal Pradesh, reportedly killing at least 18 people. Many more are feared trapped beneath the debris.
Local media outlets reported that the severe landslide occurred on Tuesday (October 7) evening in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh.
At least 18 bus passengers were killed after being crushed under the debris. The bus was said to be carrying 30-35 passengers.
The bus was traveling from Rohtak, Haryana, toward Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, when it met with the accident in the Bhalughat area on the Pathankot-Mandi National Highway.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed his deep sorrow over the incident and directed the local administration to conduct swift rescue operations.
The Chief Minister wrote on social media, "News has come of about 10 people losing their lives after a bus was hit by a massive landslide. It is feared that many more may be trapped under the debris."
Sukhu added that rescue work is being carried out on a war footing, and the concerned authorities have been instructed to use all available equipment for the operation.
Citing a local police official, the news agency PTI reported that a massive landslide fell directly on the bus, reducing the chances of survival for the passengers.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences over the tragedy. He announced compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
