
The death toll from the catastrophic fire at Gul Plaza, one of Karachi’s busiest shopping complexes, has risen to 61.
In a grim discovery, rescue workers recovered 30 charred bodies from a single shop. So far, only 15 of these victims have been identified.
The fire, which broke out on January 17, has left over 40 people still missing, according to a report by The Dawn.

Origins and Management Failures
The fire reportedly started on Saturday, January 17, in the basement of the massive complex and spread with "unbelievable speed."
Investigators believe an electrical short circuit triggered the blaze. It took fire crews 24 hours of continuous effort to bring the flames under control.
Built in 1980, Gul Plaza covers an area larger than a football field and houses over 1,200 shops, most of which have been reduced to ashes. Fire officials and witnesses described it as the worst fire in Karachi’s history.
