An autorickshaw driver and a passenger were killed after a speeding truck, driving on the wrong side of the road, rammed into them in the capital's Jatrabari area.
The accident occurred near the Mirhajirbagh Kitchen Market in Jatrabari around 1:00 AM on Friday night (April 4). The deceased rickshaw driver has been identified as Firoz Ahmed (50), while the identity of the passenger remains unknown.
An eyewitness, Md. Khairul, said, "I was having tea at a shop near Mirhajirbagh Kitchen Market around 1:00 AM when I saw a truck speeding recklessly down the wrong side of the road. Within 30 seconds, it ran over an autorickshaw. We rushed to pull the driver and passenger out from under the truck. They were taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition, where the attending doctors declared them dead."
He further added, "Bystanders detained the truck driver and informed the police. When asked why he was speeding on the wrong side, the driver claimed his truck had collided with another truck in the Dayaganj area of Jatrabari, and he was speeding in the opposite direction to catch that vehicle."
Mohammad Raju, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jatrabari Police Station, confirmed that the accident took place late at night in Mirhajirbagh. The bodies of the driver and passenger have been sent to the morgue for autopsy. The truck has been seized, and the driver was taken into custody immediately following the incident.
