Sarjis Alam, Chief Organiser (Northern Region) of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has called on the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to expand its demands beyond an electoral roadmap. He emphasised the need for justice for the July 2024 killings, comprehensive national reforms, and the prosecution of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In a statement posted on his verified Facebook account on Friday (May 23), Sarjis responded to recent comments by BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, who identified an electoral roadmap as the sole solution to the nation's ongoing political crisis. Sarjis argued that focusing solely on elections could dishearten those who participated in the July uprising, families of martyrs, and injured protesters.

"Millions took to the streets on August 5 with hope in their hearts, risking everything. Narrowing the focus now would betray their sacrifices," he wrote.

Sarjis urged the BNP to expand its demands: "Alongside the electoral roadmap, demand a roadmap for justice for the genocide, for fundamental reforms in the country, and for holding Sheikh Hasina accountable for ordering the July massacre."

He concluded by stressing that limiting the conversation to elections alone, especially after such a widespread public uprising, would be deeply disappointing—not just for activists, but for the entire nation.
