BNP's Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has expressed confidence that a free and fair election will be held under the current interim government. Speaking virtually from London at an event marking the 18th anniversary of the National People's Party (NPP), he stated that the BNP has met with the chief advisor of the interim government and reiterated its demand for national elections to be held by December.
Rahman said, "The people of this country will witness the most impartial and transparent election under this government."
The event took place on Sunday (May 25) at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in Kakrail, Dhaka, where Rahman joined virtually.
Urging citizens to continue holding the government accountable, he said, "Whether it's an interim or caretaker government, constructive criticism must continue. There's no room for ego, anger, or personal vendettas in governance."
Criticizing the previous Awami League administration, he remarked that although the constitution grants citizens the right to vote, the Awami League government deprived them of that right. "Had the parliament been formed through truly representative elections, there would have been less scope for authoritarian tendencies," he added.
Addressing the issue of reforms, Rahman noted, "Reform isn't something that comes in small or large doses— it is a continuous process." He criticized the current government for imposing sudden reforms on the National Board of Revenue (NBR) before the budget, saying it has created a state of stagnation.
