Barrister Zaima Rahman, daughter of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman, delivered her first-ever public policy speech on Sunday, emphasizing that the strength of a democratic society is found in its diversity of thought.
Speaking at an event held at the Krishibid Institution in the capital, Zaima noted that the gathering of individuals with varying ideals and experiences was a testament to a shared commitment to the nation.
"We are not all the same. Our ideals, experiences, and viewpoints are different," she remarked.
"Yet, we are sitting together and engaging in discussions because we are all thinking about the country and its people. Talking and listening together despite these differences is the real beauty of democracy."
Zaima, who appeared visibly moved during the address, acknowledged the significance of the moment, describing it as her first formal engagement at the policy level in Bangladesh.
She maintained a humble tone, stating, "I am not someone who has all the answers or solutions to every problem."
However, she expressed a firm belief that every citizen has a responsibility to contribute to the nation’s progress from their respective positions.
She concluded by stating that her primary goal for the day was to "listen, learn, and move forward together with a spirit of cooperation."
The speech marks a significant milestone for the Rahman family, as Zaima steps into the public spotlight following the transition of party leadership to her father and the recent passing of her grandmother, Begum Khaleda Zia.
