The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) observed the 90th birth anniversary of its founder and former President, Shaheed Ziaur Rahman, with deep respect and solemnity on Monday.

Senior leaders, including members of the National Standing Committee and thousands of activists, gathered at his mausoleum in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at 10:30 am to lay wreaths and offer fateha.

During the ceremony, party leaders reaffirmed their commitment to realizing Ziaur Rahman’s vision for a modern, democratic Bangladesh.

They paid tribute to his multifaceted legacy as a valiant sector commander during the Liberation War, the proclaimer of independence, and the architect of multi-party democracy.

Born in 1936 in Bogura, Ziaur Rahman’s life was defined by his transitions from a distinguished military officer to a transformative statesman.

His "Bangladeshi Nationalism" remains the ideological cornerstone of the BNP, a party that became one of the nation's most formidable political forces under the later leadership of his wife, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

Leaders present at the graveside highlighted his reputation for "extraordinary patriotism, honesty, and simplicity." They noted that his leadership not only stabilized the nation during various crises but also enhanced Bangladesh's dignity on the global stage.

Even 45 years after the party's inception, Ziaur Rahman’s political philosophy continues to guide the BNP as it navigates the country's current democratic transition.
