The nomination process for the 13th Parliament's reserved women’s seats has seen a massive response within the BNP, with over 600 aspirants collecting forms by Saturday noon.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi shared the update during a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office, noting that over 500 forms were sold on the first day alone.

BNP Assistant Office Secretary Tarikul Islam Tenzing later confirmed that as of Saturday afternoon, the number of forms sold surpassed 600, with approximately 78 to 79 forms already submitted.

The sale and submission process is scheduled to continue until Sunday.

Speaking on the selection criteria, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi emphasized the party’s commitment to democratic norms and the recognition of those who stood by the party during challenging times.

“This expectation is high because we have reached this stage after going through a very difficult situation for the last 16 to 17 years. We had to fight for a long time to ensure a free and fair election. After 15 to 16 years of struggle, we now have an environment to practise democratic norms, and we must make the best use of it,” Rizvi stated.

He further highlighted the sacrifices made by women activists, noting, “Many women faced repression. Some were arrested late at night for expressing their views on Facebook. Those active on the streets faced severe harassment, repression and false cases. They have endured continuous suffering.”

He expressed hope that candidates who contributed to the party's long-standing movements, possess a strong public image, and have the ability to speak effectively in Parliament will be prioritized.

The list of aspirants includes a diverse range of professionals, such as teachers, lawyers, cultural figures, and former student leaders.

Notable figures seen at the Nayapaltan office include singer Kanak Chapa, Bithika Binte Hossain (wife of late Swechchhasebak Dal president Shafiqul Bari Babu), and several former Members of Parliament.

Each nomination form costs BDT 2,000, and candidates are required to deposit BDT 50,000 as security upon submission. A board composed of senior party leaders will review the applications to finalize the list of candidates.

Rizvi noted that the process would be expedited due to time constraints: “Time is short. We have to complete the party’s process quickly, as the final candidates will need to complete formalities with the Election Commission.”

According to the Election Commission’s schedule, the deadline for submitting nomination papers is April 21, with scrutiny taking place on April 22 and 23.

Symbols will be allotted on April 30, and the vote is set for May 12.

Under the current seat distribution, the BNP alliance is expected to receive 36 reserved seats, while the Jamaat-e-Islami alliance and independents are slated for 13 and one seat, respectively.
