Football fans sentenced for Vinicius racist abuse

Three Spanish football fans have been handed jail sentences after racially abusing Real Madrid and Brazil striker Vinicius Junior. It's the first ever racism-related conviction in Spanish professional football.
A court in the Spanish city of Valencia has sentenced three football fans to eight years in prison for racially abusing Real Madrid and Brazil star striker Vinicius Junior.
The trio, whose names have not been made public, were found guilty of a crime against moral integrity with the aggravating circumstance of discrimination based on racist motives.
As is common with jail sentences under two years in Spain, the sentences are suspended. The three men have also been banned from Spanish football stadiums for two years and were ordered to pay all legal costs.
The sentence marks the first ever racism-related conviction in professional football in Spain after several similar cases had been shelved in the past.
Why were the 3 fans charged?
During a Spanish league game between Valencia and Real Madrid at Valencia's Mestalla Stadium on May 21, 2023, the three men were found to have shouted racist insults at Vinicius and made racist "monkey" gestures in the direction of the 23-year-old.
The men were detained , but the incident caused the match to be briefly halted and later caused uproar in Spain and an outpouring of sympathy for Vinicius.
Many saw it as a turning point in the fight against racism in Spanish football, although Vinicius continued to be subjected to racist abuse several months afterwards, with some commentators and pundits even suggesting that Vinicius' own behavior on the pitch was to blame.
In handing down the sentence, the court said that the men's shouts and gestures had caused Vinicius to suffer "feelings of frustration, shame and humiliation which undermined his dignity."
The defendants all pleaded guilty, demonstrated regret and accepted their legal culpability.
In a letter of apology to Vinicius, Real Madrid and anybody else who felt insulted by their actions, they also appealed to fellow fans to kick racism and intolerance out of the game.

Spain announce preliminary squad for Euro 2024
Spain has announced a preliminary squad for the upcoming European Championship-2024.
However, there is no big surprise in Spain's Euro team. Three players will be dropped from the preliminary squad and the main squad will be selected on June 7.
Spanish national team coach Luis de la Fuente confirmed on Monday morning (May 27).
The list is as follows:
Goalkeepers: Unai Simon, David Raya and Alex Remiro.
Defenders: Dani Carvajal, Jesus Navas, Robin le Normand, Aymeric Laporte, Dani Vivian, Nacho Fernandez, Alejandro Grimaldo, Marc Cucurella and Pau Cubarsi.

All about the ICC Men's T20 World Cup
The ninth edition of ICC T20 World Cup is knocking at the door. This global tournament will be held from June 2.
T20 World Cup will feature a record number of teams, with 20 different sides represented in a tournament co-hosted by the USA and West Indies between June 1-29. Canada will take on the USA in the opening match of the short format supremacy. And on June 29, the curtain will come down through the finals of this global epic. The opening match of this battle of ball-bat frenzy will be played at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas and the title-deciding match will be played in Bridgetown, Barbados.
World Cup Host: The West Indies will jointly host this tournament with the United States. However, this is the first time that an ICC event is going to be held on US. On the other hand, West Indies was the host country of 2007 ODI World Cup and 2010 T20 World Cup. Apart from this, two women's global tournaments have been organized in the Caribbean country.
World Cup Venue: This year's World Cup is going to be organized in 9 venues of the two countries. Of these, the matches will be held at three venues in the United States and six in the West Indies. New York, Florida and Texas in America. On the other hand, West Indies will play World Cup matches in Guyana, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Antigua, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago.
20-team tournament: For the first time, the T20 World Cup is taking place with 20 teams. In addition to the two hosts West Indies and the United States, the top eight teams of the last edition, Australia, England, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, South Africa and Sri Lanka get the opportunity to play directly on the world stage. On the other hand, due to being ahead in the ranking, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are also playing directly in this global tournament.
World Cup format: In this tournament, 20 teams will be divided into four groups. Each team will play four matches in the group stage. The top two teams from each of the four groups will be divided into two groups in the Super Eight. And from there, the top two teams will play in the semi-finals. The winners of the semis will enter the two title fights.

If the match is tied: If a match is tied in the World Cup this time, it will be converted into a super over. If the super over is tied, it will be super over again. Play will continue in Super Over till the result of the match.
Former champions: Six teams have won the T20 World Cup in the previous eight editions. India romped to the title in the inaugural tournament of the shorter format. Apart from this, West Indies and England have won this title twice.

Bangladesh reveals theme song of T20 World Cup
The ninth edition of T20 World Cup is going to be screened in USA and West Indies from June 2. Keeping this excitement in front, mobile phone operator 'Robi' released the theme song of Bangladesh. The organization has taken this great step to spread the World Cup craze among the fans and excite the cricketers in the game.
'Robi' posted a video on the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Facebook page on Wednesday (May 29) night. The theme song is sung in that video. This year's theme song is titled 'Baje Donka Nai Shonka, Jani Parbe Tumio'.
This song will make the whole Bangladesh roar with the song. The Tigers of Bengal will shake the field and the pitch will dominate. The flag of victory will fly in the T20 World Cup, and the world will see the power of the Tigers.
Although the curtain of the tournament will rise on June 2, Bangladesh will enter the field on June 8. Shanto's team will play against Sri Lanka on that day. The red-greens will face South Africa in the next match. Hathurusingha's students will play against Netherlands and Nepal in the last two matches in group stage.
Threat of attack on India-Pakistan match in World Cup
India-Pakistan match in cricket means extra excitement. The two superpowers of Asia will meet in the group stage of the upcoming T20 World Cup. But security concerns have arisen ahead of the high-voltage match. Terrorist group ISIS has threatened terrorist attacks in this match.
The most high-voltage match in the tournament will be held on June 9 at Nassau Cricket Stadium in New York. Apart from this match, seven more matches will be held at this venue. State government and law enforcement agencies are beefing up security across New York after the threat.
New York Governor Kathy Hosul said that the games will be held properly, that's why the state government is working on all kinds of security. His administration is already working with law enforcement agencies.
'I have directed the New York State Police to engage in enhanced security measures, including increased law enforcement presence, enhanced surveillance and thorough screening processes,' he said. 'Public safety is my top priority and we are committed to making the Cricket World Cup a safe, enjoyable one,' he added.
T20 World Cup 2024 schedule at a glance
For the first time, the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup is going to start from June 2 with 20 teams. In the new format, five teams will play in four groups in this year's four-sixer fight.
The tournament is being co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States. The matches will be played in nine venues, including six in the West Indies and three in the United States. A total of 55 matches will be played in the group stage, Super Eight, semi-finals and final. Of these, 41 matches will be played in the Caribbean islands and 14 matches in the United States.
Format, Groups and Seedings
Four groups of five teams will engage in a single-round robin format in the league stage. The top two teams from each group will proceed into the Super 8s. If the top-eight ranked teams in the T20I format will proceed into the Super 8, they will be grouped based on their pre-determined seedings, irrespective of their first or second position in the league stage.
The league stage groups are:
Group A: India, Pakistan, Ireland, United States, Canada.
Group B: Australia, England, Namibia, Oman, Scotland.
Group C: Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Uganda, West Indies.
Group D: Bangladesh, Netherlands, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka.
In the Super 8, the teams will again split into two groups in a single-round robin league from which the top two teams in either group advance into the semi-finals.
Pre-determined seedings for the Super 8s are:
Group 1: India (A1); Australia (B2); New Zealand (C1); Sri Lanka (D2)
Group 2: Pakistan (A2); England (B1); West Indies (C2); South Africa (D1)

United States
New York, Texas and Florida will stage 16 matches in the US. New York will host eight of these matches including the marquee India-Pakistan clash.
West Indies
Six Caribbean nations will host as many as 39 matches. Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago will host these games across three stages of the tournament. The final will be played in Barbados on June 29.

BCB appoints new coach
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed Naveed Nawaz as the Head Coach and Batting Consultant of the Bangladesh Under-19 team. The country's cricket governing body confirmed the matter in a statement on Saturday (June 1).
He has been appointed on a two-year contract until 2026. The title-winning coach will also work as a batting consultant for the youth as well as the age-group team.
After retirement in 2005, Nawaz concentrated on coaching. He has the experience of coaching various clubs in domestic cricket in Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka's Under-19 team, women's national team.
He took charge of the Bangladesh Under-19 team in 2018. The red-green team was runners-up in the 2019 Youth Asia Cup. Then the youth lifted the title in the Youth World Cup in South Africa. BCB extended the contract with him after the title celebration.
Bangladesh also played in the 2022 Youth World Cup. However, the Tiger youth could not do well. Then the BCB did not renew the contract. In April that year, Nawaz was appointed as the assistant coach of the Sri Lankan national team. He had been there for so long.
T20 World Cup: Can be the farewell stage for these cricketers

Mahmudullah Riyad is the most senior cricketer in Tigers T20 team. Despite making his T20 World Cup debut in 2007, the 38-years-old batting all-rounder has played just 26 matches. India's 37-year-old captain Rohit Sharma, 35-year-old Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, one of the most successful players in the short format of cricket, could be the last T20 World Cup this year.
England's 36-year-old all-rounder Moeen Ali and Australia's 38-year-old opener David Warner are also on the list of possible T20 farewells.
This World Cup may be Glenn Maxwell's last World Cup. However, there were concerns about his presence in Ajid's squad.
Despite being irregular in the national team, Andre Russell, the peddler of T20, will play the World Cup this time. However, the chances of seeing him in the Caribbean jersey is very low.
