Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has finally lifted their long-awaited UEFA Champions League trophy, delivering a crushing defeat to Inter Milan in the final. However, the historic victory turned tragic as celebrations in Paris erupted into violence.
Shortly after the match concluded on Saturday night (May 31) at Munich's Allianz Arena, jubilant fans gathered across Paris. The match had been broadcast on a large screen at PSG’s home ground, Parc des Princes, and thousands of supporters poured into the streets, particularly along the iconic Champs-Élysées, to celebrate.
What began as joyous festivities soon descended into chaos. Fireworks, firecrackers, and projectiles were thrown at police, sparking intense confrontations. In response, riot police deployed tear gas to disperse unruly crowds.
Reports also indicate that some individuals attempted to loot nearby shops. Authorities used water cannons to bring the situation under control. By Saturday night, 294 people had been detained. According to the latest update from AFP, the number of arrests rose to 559 by midday Sunday.
Tragically, two individuals lost their lives during clashes between police and fans. The unrest also disrupted public transportation, with metro services temporarily suspended and trains halted due to fans climbing onto the tracks.
As tensions escalated, PSG star Ousmane Dembélé issued a plea to supporters. Speaking to Canal+, he said, "Celebrate the victory, but please do so without destroying Paris."
