Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has described the forced withdrawal of pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a humiliation for Bangladesh, lending his full support to the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) recent defiant measures.

Speaking to reporters at his Kalibari residence on Monday morning, the veteran politician emphasized that the dignity of a national athlete is inseparable from the dignity of the state.

"The honour of our country is deeply linked to cricket... One of our cricketers has been insulted, and through that decision, the country itself was also insulted," Fakhrul stated, referring to the circumstances surrounding the bowler's release from the Kolkata Knight Riders.

The former cricketer and ex-board member also addressed the BCB’s subsequent decision to request a relocation of T20 World Cup matches away from India due to security fears.

While backing the board's protective stance, he noted that international diplomacy remains key, suggesting that "the path should remain open to resolving such issues through dialogue."

Shifting his focus to broader bilateral relations, Fakhrul asserted that a future BNP administration would secure Bangladesh's fair share of transboundary water through "discussions and maintaining mutual respect with India," rather than through confrontation.

On the domestic front, Fakhrul criticized the interim government’s inability to recover all illegal firearms ahead of the upcoming March elections, calling it a "government failure."

Despite these concerns over law and order, he expressed optimism about the political climate, noting, "I think congenial environment for the election is currently exist in the country... But ground reality will be understood when election campaign will begin officially."

He also announced that BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman plans to visit the northern region soon to pay respects at the graves of martyrs from the July mass uprising, including the landmark grave of Abu Sayed in Rangpur.
