In a series of stunning and ruthless decisions, England manager Thomas Tuchel on Friday announced his official squad for the upcoming World Cup, sensationally omitting high-profile superstars Cole Palmer and Phil Foden.

Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold was also heavily omitted from the selection, while Saudi-based Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney emerged as the biggest surprise inclusion.

Tuchel, a Champions League winner during his tenure at Chelsea, was hired with the singular mission to end England's 60-year wait to win a major international tournament.

The German tactician—who previously managed Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich—has made a sequence of incredibly bold calls that will undoubtedly face harsh scrutiny if the Three Lions fall short of glory in the coming weeks.

Both Palmer and Foden played monumental roles in guiding England to the final of Euro 2024.

However, the Chelsea playmaker and the Manchester City star have ultimately paid the ultimate price for enduring poor domestic seasons with their respective clubs.

Tuchel admitted that breaking the devastating news to the players who missed out on a spot on the plane to the United States was a grueling task.

"It was difficult, sometimes painfully difficult and like even in the phone calls I felt the emotion," Tuchel revealed. "So I called all players that were with us in camp at least one time, I called them, I wanted to show at least the appreciation and the respect for what they have done."

Despite the heavy decisions, the German manager expressed an immense eagerness to finally fly out and submerge himself into tournament football.

"Now I'm feeling in between relieved and excited and ready to go because once you get the energy back and once you see the excitement of the players that you chose and then once the decisions are made it gives you a certain edge, it gives clarity," he stated.

The shocking snubs did not stop at Foden and Palmer.

Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin were both completely overlooked, despite finishing the domestic campaign as two of the highest-scoring Englishmen in the Premier League.

In another unexpected twist, veteran Brentford midfielder and former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was drafted into the squad at the direct expense of Crystal Palace’s rising talent, Adam Wharton.

Meanwhile, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire took to social media on Thursday to voice his utter disbelief after learning he was left out.

"I was confident I could (have) played a major part this summer for my country after the season I've had," the 33-year-old posted. "I've been left shocked and gutted by the decision."

Maguire's United teammate Luke Shaw was also discarded from the roster. Conversely, Tuchel opted to take a massive gamble on Manchester City centre-back John Stones, despite his severe lack of game time during an injury-plagued season.

Up front, Ivan Toney returns to the fold. He famously made a critical impact off the bench at the Euros two years ago, but has remarkably played only two minutes of international football since moving to the Saudi Pro League in 2024.

England is scheduled to kick off their highly anticipated World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas on June 17, before facing Ghana on June 23 and wrapping up the group stage against Panama four days later.
