Bangladesh enjoyed a dream start to their first Test tour of Australia in 23 years on Thursday, with pace sensation Hasan Mahmud spearheading a brilliant bowling performance that skittled the hosts for just 198 runs at the Marrara Cricket Ground.

Hasan claimed a career-best 6-55, marking the third-best innings figures by a Bangladeshi fast bowler in Test history.

He now sits behind only Shahadat Hossain Rajib, who recorded 6-27 against South Africa and Ebadot Hossain, who famously took 6-46 during Bangladesh’s historic victory over New Zealand in Mount Maunganui.

Complementing Hasan’s stellar display, Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain each claimed two wickets, ensuring that all ten Australian dismissals were credited to the Bangladeshi pace battery.

This achievement marks only the second time in the nation’s history that its quicks have accounted for every wicket in a single Test innings, the previous instance occurring during the 2024 Rawalpindi Test against Pakistan.

After Australia made the surprising decision to bat first on a surface offering early movement, the Bangladeshi bowlers expertly exploited the swing-friendly conditions.

While the Australian batting lineup struggled to find rhythm against Hasan’s disciplined, two-way swing, veteran Steve Smith provided a lone pillar of resistance, defying the odds to score a team-high 71.

The hosts initially looked comfortable as Travis Head and Jake Weatherald stitched together a 45-run opening stand.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically when Hasan struck twice in consecutive overs to remove both openers.

Ebadot Hossain soon deepened the pressure by dismissing Marnus Labuschagne, leaving Australia reeling at 61-3 heading into the lunch break.

Following the interval, Smith anchored the innings and forged a vital 55-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Alex Carey.

Ebadot, serving as the match’s unsung hero by consistently troubling the Australian order with his steep extra bounce, eventually broke the partnership by removing Carey for 19.

Hasan later returned to claim the prized scalp of Smith—securing his third five-wicket haul in his young international career—before swiftly dismantling the remainder of the Australian tail to wrap up the innings.
