Opening batsman Tanzid Hasan Tamim produced a historic maiden Test hundred to put Bangladesh in command on Day 2 of the opening Test against Australia at the Marrara Cricket Ground.

The 25-year-old left-hander struck 101 off 197 deliveries, becoming the first Bangladeshi cricketer to register a Test century on Australian soil.

His landmark knock followed a stellar opening-day performance by pacer Hasan Mahmud, whose career-best figures of 6 for 55 bundled out the home side for 198.

Reaching his century off 188 balls, Tanzid skillfully navigated the pace, movement and bounce generated by Australia’s seam attack of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Beau Webster on a greenish pitch that gradually softened as play advanced.

Appearing in only his second Test match, the young opener displayed remarkable composure throughout his stay at the crease.

He brought up his initial half-century in 102 balls with five boundaries, before shifting gears to complete his second fifty in just 86 deliveries by adding three more fours and a six.

The milestone moment arrived during the 64th over, when Tanzid pushed off-spinner Nathan Lyon toward long-on for a single.

His century proved critical for the visitors during a pivotal morning session on Day 2, allowing Bangladesh to cross the 300-run mark and establish a substantial three-figure lead.

Along the way, Tanzid anchored a 102-run second-wicket partnership with Mominul Haque, who contributed 49 before being dismissed.

The stand narrowly fell short of Bangladesh's record second-wicket tally in Australia—a 108-run alliance between Habibul Bashar and Hannan Sarkar established at Cairns in 2003.

Tanzid’s resolute innings eventually concluded when he lofted Lyon toward long-off and was caught, departing for 101.

His performance was not entirely without chance, as Steve Smith dropped an opportunity at slip when the batter was on 62—a reprieve that cost the hosts dearly.

Prior to this Test milestone, the 25-year-old had already cemented his place in Bangladesh's limited-overs squads, boasting 40 ODIs and 53 T20Is to his name, along with one hundred and nine fifties in ODIs alongside 13 half-centuries in T20Is.

While Tanzid celebrated his groundbreaking century, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto fell just short of three figures.

Shanto was dismissed for 84, but his efforts helped extend the visitors' lead, keeping Bangladesh firmly on track to pursue a historic Test victory on Australian soil.
