The rivalry between the two global megastars has spanned many years. Putting that on-field competition behind him, Cristiano Ronaldo has paid tribute to Lionel Messi following the Argentine's retirement from international football.
Messi played his final match for Argentina yesterday, leading the team to a 3-0 victory over Benin in front of over 85,000 spectators at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires. In his farewell match, Messi scored one goal and provided two assists.
Following the match, the 39-year-old Messi shared a long message on Instagram reflecting on his international career. He wrote,
"Yesterday was my last match, and I already miss the sky-blue and white jersey. I know I've made the right decision. It has been an incredible journey mixed with immense joy and a touch of sadness, but I know every step was worth it."
Throughout his long career with Argentina, Messi won the 2021 and 2024 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, and the 2022 World Cup. In his farewell message, he remembered his teammates, supporters, clubs, and legendary icon Diego Maradona.
Messi wrote, "I don't want to forget Diego (Maradona). He led our country to where it deserves to be. As I always say, he helped us—just as he was by our side when alive, he guides every step we take from heaven."
Ronaldo responded to Messi's post, putting their long-standing rivalry aside to praise the achievements of the Argentine captain.
In the comments under the Argentine legend's post, Ronaldo wrote,
"Leo, after fighting for your country for so many years, you have created history that will last forever. My highest respect for everything you have achieved for Argentina. Hugs."
Meanwhile, Ronaldo is facing his own troubles. Following his sudden departure from the national team training camp, a conflict has reportedly arisen with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus, leaving his future in the Portugal jersey uncertain.
