The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has slapped Cristiano Ronaldo with a 30-day ban and a fine of €255 for leaving the national team camp during their UEFA Nations League campaign.
However, the suspension will not prevent the Portugal captain from playing in next month's Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales.
According to reports, Ronaldo left the squad following a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus over playing time. After remaining on the bench during the match against Norway, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner accused the coach of breaking his promises.
Following his departure, Ronaldo stated in a social media statement that the coach had promised to give him thirty minutes of playing time against Norway, for which he had prepared accordingly. Although he warmed up after the interval, he was ultimately denied the chance to take the field.
Ronaldo said, "The coach asked me if I was ready to play for thirty minutes against Norway. I agreed. He told me to get ready because I would play for thirty minutes. But in the end, he didn't put me on the pitch. The coach did not keep his word to me."
At the same time, Ronaldo expressed his willingness to accept any disciplinary action from the federation while affirming his desire to continue playing for the national team.
The FPF announced the sanctions against Ronaldo on Monday, following a previous temporary suspension.
However, Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proença expressed confidence in the star player, stating his belief that the national team captain will resolve his differences with the coach and return to the squad.
Proença said, "Ronaldo is the greatest asset in the history of Portuguese football. He is our captain and one of the most important players in the team."
Despite facing disciplinary action, Portuguese football authorities remain optimistic about Ronaldo's future with the national team, noting that the path remains open for his participation in upcoming matches.
