Windies' Batting Power Clinches First T20 Win Against Bangladesh

After losing the ODI series, Caribbean coach Daren Sammy had already issued a threat regarding the T20 matches. His players delivered on the coach’s words in the first T20 International, securing a crucial victory.

With a superb all-round performance with both bat and ball, the West Indies defeated Bangladesh by 16 runs to take an opening 1-0 lead in the series.

On Monday (October 27), the West Indies batted first and set a challenging target of 166 runs for Bangladesh.

In response, Bangladesh was bowled out for 149 with two balls remaining, handing the Caribbean side a 16-run win.

Bangladesh Innings Falters Early

Chasing the challenging target, Tanzid Tamim hinted at a good start, scoring 12 runs in the very first over. However, he was caught out in the next over, managing a quick 15 runs off 5 balls.

Liton Das, batting at number three, also struggled to score, making just 5 runs off 8 balls. Saif Hassan failed to impress with the bat, scoring 8 runs off 7 balls. Shamim Patwari accompanied him briefly, scoring 1 run off 4 balls. Consequently, the Tigers lost 4 wickets for 42 runs in the Powerplay.

Sohan and Hridoy then tried to stabilize the innings, helping the team reach its fifty in the eighth over. However, Sohan was bowled by Pierre after scoring 5 runs. Hridoy was then joined by Tanzim Shakib.

Hridoy couldn't prolong his stay either, getting out after scoring 28 runs off 25 balls, which effectively knocked Bangladesh out of the contest. Towards the end, Shakib, alongside Nasum, continued to swing the bat, helping Bangladesh reduce the margin of defeat.

Shakib was eventually dismissed after scoring 33 runs off 27 balls. Nasum followed an over later, making 20 runs off 13 balls.

At this point, the Tigers were 8 wickets down for 123 runs. In the final over, Bangladesh needed 20 runs, but Taskin hit his own stumps with his foot (hit-wicket) while attempting a hook for six off the fourth ball.

Bangladesh was ultimately bowled out for 149 runs with two balls remaining, including Taskin's 10 runs off 8 balls and Mustafizur's unbeaten 11 runs.

For the West Indies, Odean Smith and Johnson Holder and Jayden Seales each took three wickets. Additionally, Akeal Hosein took two wickets, while Romario Shepherd and Kharry Pierre claimed one each.

Earlier, opening batsmen Brandon King and Alick Athanaze started cautiously for the West Indies, putting up 35 runs in the Powerplay.

Liton brought Rishad into the attack in the ninth over, and he immediately responded by bowling Athanaze, who was out for 34 runs off 27 balls.

King continued scoring from the other end, but Taskin delivered a major blow to the West Indies in the 13th over.

Taskin dismissed King, who had scored 33 off 36 balls, on the first delivery, and Rutherford for a duck on the second, leaving the Caribbean side at 82 for 3.

Shai Hope, who came in at number three, then took charge alongside Rovman Powell.

In the final overs, Hope and Powell accelerated the scoring with boundaries. Shakib conceded 22 runs, including three sixes, in the 20th over.

Hope's 46 runs off 28 balls and Powell's 44 runs off 28 balls helped the visitors post a total of 165 for 3.
