Driven by a magnificent unbeaten 131 from Daryl Mitchell, New Zealand defeated India by 7 wickets in the second ODI to level the three-match series.
Playing in Indore on Wednesday (January 14), the visitors chased down a challenging target of 285 with 15 balls to spare, marking their highest successful ODI run chase on Indian soil.
India’s Innings: Rahul’s Ton Anchors the Host
After being put in to bat first, India faced early pressure as the openers struggled to find rhythm. Shubman Gill managed to find his touch, scoring a steady 56, but a middle-order collapse left the hosts reeling at 118/4.
KL Rahul then took charge, anchoring the innings with a composed performance. He accelerated in the final overs to finish unbeaten on 112, guiding India to a competitive total of 284/7 in their 50 overs.
Top Performer (Bowling): New Zealand’s Christian Clarke was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three crucial wickets.
The Chase: Mitchell’s Masterclass
New Zealand’s pursuit of 285 got off to a shaky start, losing openers Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls early.
However, Daryl Mitchell turned the tide of the match. Joining forces with Will Young, Mitchell put on a dominant 162-run partnership for the third wicket.
While Young was eventually dismissed for a well-played 87, Mitchell remained immovable. He reached his century in just 96 balls and ended the match with a career-best 131 off 117 deliveries*. Glenn Phillips provided the finishing touches with an unbeaten 32, as the Kiwis reached 286/3 in 47.3 overs.
Series Outlook
The three-match series is now tied at 1–1. With momentum shifting toward the Black Caps, the pressure mounts on India heading into the third and final ODI, which will serve as the series decider.
